On May 19, 2008, 5Z took a trip to the Slater Memorial Museum in Norwich, CT. The Museum has an amazing collection of casts of famous Greek statues - everything from Aphrodite to Zeus, and lots more in between. First we met our guide, Maryann Hall, who teaches art and art history at Norwich Free Academy - the museum is actually part of this school. Then we saw a slide show about the differences between Greek and Egyptian art and how the Greeks adapted many of their ideas from previous cultures. Next, we took a tour of their art gallery and saw all of the amazing sculptures. We broke up into small groups and acted as experts, telling the story behind each statue. We also drew many of the statues. Norwich Free Academy has a great art program. We went to see a show of art by their students. It was REALLY amazing. Overall, it was a great trip.
